So just why is the legendary Lincoln Continental doing so poorly?  I know why.. UGLY!

Ok for one, SUV sales are up, car sales are down, thats an easy one.  People have decided, especially in the US, that if they need to spend an arm and a leg, it better do a lot, be all wheel drive with great ground clearance, carry a lot of people, and carry a lot of stuff.

Gas prices have allowed Americans to purchase what they really want, larger vehicles.  But hey, the Continental is big, right?  No it is not.  It has been streamlined and compressed down to near mid size levels.  Customers want luxury and comfort.

That goofy drive selector that is on the dash right next to the radio.  People do not like that crap.  It is silly, and far too easy to hit R when you really just want to change the radio station.  Stick to the old fashioned shifter.  This is killing more brands than this one.

Leather, where is the leather?  Ok seats have some, but the seats look funny.  They adjust 10 ways to Sunday, but don't exude performance, comfort, or luxury.  Heck put a large comfy couch into the thing.  A continental should not have little seats with little bolsters.

The starting price of the Continental is $45k.  Really?  Are you kidding?  For that price I can get me a BMW or some big SUV that I thought was too expensive until I saw this car.  So people opt for a few bucks more to get a big (or small) SUV.

Where are the headlights, it looks funny.  Oh and the lines of the body, it is one ugly car!  The front grille is anemic as well.

Why are the heat and AC vents above the radio?  The dash is also ugly.  I have to drive and look at this wacky design all day?  The controls are too low for older people, and young people will go get sport cars.  No thanks..

Also, the car has no real personality.  It blends in.  Looks like all the other 4 door cars on the road. Swoopy, and hard to distinguish from a distance.  Lincoln continental used to be a stand out unique design.  Also, Lincoln vehicles just look like Fords with a few different chrome parts or moldings.  No personality, not anymore.

What about performance, this is a V6 turbo charged engine.  Don't tell us the numbers and why oh why turbo is better than a V8.  Put a V8 into the thing.  Spend $45k and we get a V6 turbo?  Come on man!

I do like the 2 tone color steering wheel, but not for $45k.  At least it has a CD player.  But should not be an option, this means many will not have it.  Yeah, remember CDs are on their way out, but many of us have a large library of CDs and would like to use them.  This is a good addition, costs only $10 to have one!

But as far as the touch button start, I think people prefer a key.  At least the older target audience does.

Matter of fact, if you look at the brochure, many of the toys are options.  These should all be standard.  This is your flagship luxury car, why is the Climate Package an option?  Today people want a lot of tech, why is the Tech package an option?  Just what is standard anyway?  4 wheels and a horn?

So I like Ford, yes Lincoln is Ford, I would choose the Explorer, Camaro, Navigator, Sierra Truck, F150, or something else, over the Continental.  Many other people are too.  It is no surprise to me.

Adam West - Batman TV Star - Dies at 88

This is some very sad news, that Adam West, famed Batman TV star passed away at 88.  As a very young child, I watched the TV series after school, and it made a huge impression on me.  Batman from the 1960s TV show, became my role model, hero, and friend.  To this day I am a Batman nut, in large part due to the early tears when I would enjoy the campy show.  Unknown to me at the time, it was all tongue in cheek, comedy, but as a kid, you take it seriously, and it formed my moral compass of right and wrong.  All for the best, of course, I never looked up to the villains, always Batman.  Robin would get on my nerves, he was always getting them captured.  But I imagined, though I wanted to be Batman, I knew I was Robin.  Superhero in training.  Together the show was original, and fun.  Thanks to all the starts who made it possible, and thanks to Adam West for his unique take on the character that set the stage for all Batman entertainment & literature to come.

Do White Americans Have White Privilege?

The White privilege movement is turning back the clock in terms of equality (both real and perceived), which could work to overturn sacrifice and efforts forged in the 60s.  Shameful!

Windows 8.1, is it even Relevant? Part 2

In a recent post to the Blog, I asked wether Windows 8 is even relevant today?  See the post here..   I had repaired a Windows 10 system, and was forced to load the original OS on the laptop, back to Windows 8.  A rootkit had infected the system.  Instead of attempting to clean it out, sometimes it is just best to start over.

So thats what I did!  I wiped the entire system, loaded Windows 8, then patched to 8.1 (the most current version).  Could I have cleaned out the rootkit.  I think so, but wanted to be 100% sure.  I already know that many of the rootkits and trojans dig in so very deep, that cleaning it sometimes also leaves a damaged OS that doesn't run very well.  Windows has its challenges out of the box, so I thought it was best to reload, play it safe, and allow peace of mind for my "customer".  Just in case they do shopping and personal information on the system.

My "customer" so far is very happy (5 months), it runs well, and actually Windows 8 is not half bad when forced to use it.  If you disliked the tiles in Windows 8, and yes, I dislike the tiles.  You must also hate them in Windows 10.  Windows 8 had an entire desktop to utilize, now Windows 10 has sucked the life from the Start Menu, to display the live tiles in the Start Menu structure.  So you only see the tiles when you click the start button.

First, is Windows 8 relevant?  Here is the answer you have all been waiting for.  (Drum Roll) It is actually very relevant.  If Windows 10 would have been deployed properly, it would have killed Windows 8.  BUT Microsoft positioned themselves in such a way, that windows 10 is actually harder to use than 8.  Why?  When you use 10, you expect behavior like Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista.  When you run Windows 8, you expect it to run as Windows 8, unlike any other flavor of OS available today.  Windows 10 gets in its own way and lessens productvity.

Yes it is relevant, due to the abysmal failure of 10.  This doesn't mean I love 8, it just means that each OS has its place.  10 has failed us by not providing a stable OS in which to get work done.  It has been patched to glory with all kinds of vulnerable things abated, and I am sure we will have many years of holes yet to be filled.  You can run Windows 10 in the Windows 8 method, if you wish.  I say just stick to Windows 8 until Windows 25 comes out.  Then, perhaps, the bugs and such in the code will be fixed and properly run well to allow us to utilize the OS as we did before all this Tile envy.

I would prefer to see the Windows Tiles on the desktop, think like Active Desktop, and lets have the Windows start button clear of junk, and fully user configurable, and have the ability to "skin" the Start Menu structure.

Windows 8 will endure, as long as Windows 10 continues to mis-step its way across our desktops.

If you really want something that runs well, got back to Windows 7.  Thats what I am doing.  I plan to eradicate all the free upgrades to Windows 10 that were forced on me, and stick to something that works, and is proven.  Or do what others are doing, use your cell phone or iPad for work, and drop the desktop.

Of course, I do all my real work on a Mac.  Go figure!  Wish I could get OS X for all my PCs, and it all be legal and fully supported.

McAfee may have the best Virus Scan tool out there.  McAfee has dedicated some resources to rootkit removers, and other anti-malware tools that are FREE.  Understand that your purchase of the Virus Scan tool helps to fund this kind of thing, but in the long run, shows that McAfee gets it, and provides this free software to actually help us out of some tough spots.

Grab the tools you need while they last, they could have a change of heart.  They might even be some good utilities you want to keep on a thumb drive, for when you have to clean and fix your Windows system!

It really is amazing.  I recall when Records and Turntables died out.  It must have been some point in the mid 80s.  I was a huge fan of records.  The sound was great, hated the cracks and pops.  CDs took over not long after, and no one looked back.  BUT today, you can find all kinds of new modern turntables.  A revival so to speak, is at hand.  I have not seen so many turntables available to a consumer.  Some are just simply stunning.  Consider something like this Orbit Plus Uturn.  Snazzy!

MAC OS X can now Load Latest Compatible Version!

This has to be one of the most valuable features to the Mac OS X for those re-installing.  One used to need to load original version, which, if you had an old Mac, could have been a few versions back.  Then you needed to patch, and then you needed to upgrade through each subsequent MAC OS X versions.  Now, Apple has fixed this time consuming effort.

Windows 8.1, is it even relevant?

Back on May of 2013, I suggest one should hold off for the fixes to be applied to windows 8.  We have Windows 8.1 available, and a few years under our belts.  Microsoft decided to fix 8 with the latest Windows 10.  Funny, I hate Windows 10 more than Windows 8.  And yes, I don't car much for Windows 8 either.

As a Windows System Administrator, I am sometimes asked to repair laptops for friends and co-workers.  Even today, I am stunned at how many times an OS has been hacked, exploited, damaged, or just plain runs like molasses in the winter time.  You might think that over the 15 years, of various Operating systems, and the collection of great minds working on great strides towards better code, that these issues would be nonexistent.  At least they would be less than they are today.

No such luck.  The latest problem I encountered is a root kit, embedded inside Windows 10.  How does this happen?  Well pops up ask or warn you, or for that matter they can say, "hey, do you like Chocolate?"  You hit Yes, and the thing installs.  Amazing at the ingenuity of the hackers and crackers today.  If they spent just half of their resolve, they would be making great sums of money.

What is a root kit? Google says it best...

1. "a set of software tools that enable an unauthorized user to gain control of a computer system without being detected."

Some root kits are good, many are bad.  If you are not aware of it, it is probably bad.

Anyway, as with many of us, the original discs were missing or lost.  New systems today don't even have original discs.  Companies insist that you create your own set of backup discs or USB backup utilities.  I URGE YOU, right now to go create them.. even before finishing this read.  Seems the HP laptop came with Windows 8.1, and on the site have only Windows 8.1 compatible drivers available for some of the hardware components.  So Windows 8.1 it was.  At least HP offered the re-install "discs" on a USB drive for $50.  A bit steep, but in the long run worth it.

Why?  See the OS that comes from the vendors now have the activation codes set to be automatic.  No longer does one have to type in the long series of codes from a sticker plastered on the bottom of the laptop or PC.  Matter of fact, there are no stickers anymore for many modern PCs and laptops.

I re-installed the OS, after I saved the users data to a CD.  The tool clears the drive, wipes it clean, and installs the pristine OS windows 8.1.  Awesome.  Now, copy the users data to the laptop, and finished?  Well, not quite, his apps can not be re-installed, since there are no discs.  Many are a few years old, and not available.  One in particular will need to be re-purchased.  Users doesn't mind, but it is a hassle.  This way he will have the latest an greatest software, updated, and will have backup media, if ordered.

After it was loaded, files copied, time to do updates.  But no luck.  Updates would not work.  The windows 8.1 interface, in all it mono chromatic blocky self, didn't provide any errors, codes or problems pop ups.  It just keep looking, and looking, and looking for updates.  Many hours went by, several days n a row, and even one full weekend for around 12 hours.  So I am no Einstein, but I think it has a problem.  A bit of searching the net provides some ideas from various people.  One such solution, I believe based on experience, is probably the right one.  The Update engine needs to be updated to the latest version, so it talks the proper language back to the mother ship.  I turn off the auto update, something I can not do in 10, to ensure update problems don't cancel each other rout.  I apply Windows8.1-KB3138615-x64.msu, and restart.  I run Windows Update manually, check for updates, and let it run for about 15 minutes.  It finally comes back with a magic screen saying, updates need to be applied.  Woo Hoo!  I check out the list, and it is some 2 GIG of updates.  Thanks goodness for cable internet speeds.

In my next post I plan to let you know how all went to conclusion, and will provide you some tips on how to guard against root kits, viruses, trojans, and hackers.  I also plan to give you some opinions on Windows 8.1 against Windows 7, and Windows 10.

America has spoken, and Liberalism and Socialism has been rejected, hands down.  Hillary Clinton an her extension of Obama's politics, has been flatly denied.  The left is out there crying, protesting (yes protesting a valid election, get a job would ya), and their lives are in utter chaos.  I can say that payback is something to marvel.  The Libs and Democrats have lost it all.  They lost the Presidency, the House, the Senate, and now will lose the capability to insert Liberal judges.  They lost many races for governorship, local legislatures in some 30 states.  Notice the message, this was an election based on idealism, and a rejection of the liberal media machine touting diversity in place of exceptionalism, hard work, and traditional values.  Make no mistake, now is not the time to cave, and reach across the isle.  Now President Trump must follow through on his campaign promises to stab liberalism at its heart.  The message is clear.  Liberalism and Socialism has been rejected, and we have placed at the helm someone who doesn't owe Washington DC a thing, but he does owe the American people, that is for sure.  Thank you America!

Trump's claim that Mexico would pay for the wall may be coming true!

Essentially, Trump's promise to build a wall and end illegal immigration has caused a rush for the border that is crippling Mexico's resources. Mexico can either let undocumented migrants enter their country willy nilly en route to the US, or they can take strong action to stem the tide of immigration for their own benefit. Which would be best accomplished by building a wall, either literally, or through a strict enforcement policy.

All of a sudden, Trump's absurd claim that Mexico would pay for the wall doesn't sound so absurd.
