It really is amazing.  I recall when Records and Turntables died out.  It must have been some point in the mid 80s.  I was a huge fan of records.  The sound was great, hated the cracks and pops.  CDs took over not long after, and no one looked back.  BUT today, you can find all kinds of new modern turntables.  A revival so to speak, is at hand.  I have not seen so many turntables available to a consumer.  Some are just simply stunning.  Consider something like this Orbit Plus Uturn.  Snazzy!

Windows 8.1, is it even relevant?

Back on May of 2013, I suggest one should hold off for the fixes to be applied to windows 8.  We have Windows 8.1 available, and a few years under our belts.  Microsoft decided to fix 8 with the latest Windows 10.  Funny, I hate Windows 10 more than Windows 8.  And yes, I don't car much for Windows 8 either.

As a Windows System Administrator, I am sometimes asked to repair laptops for friends and co-workers.  Even today, I am stunned at how many times an OS has been hacked, exploited, damaged, or just plain runs like molasses in the winter time.  You might think that over the 15 years, of various Operating systems, and the collection of great minds working on great strides towards better code, that these issues would be nonexistent.  At least they would be less than they are today.

No such luck.  The latest problem I encountered is a root kit, embedded inside Windows 10.  How does this happen?  Well pops up ask or warn you, or for that matter they can say, "hey, do you like Chocolate?"  You hit Yes, and the thing installs.  Amazing at the ingenuity of the hackers and crackers today.  If they spent just half of their resolve, they would be making great sums of money.

What is a root kit? Google says it best...

1. "a set of software tools that enable an unauthorized user to gain control of a computer system without being detected."

Some root kits are good, many are bad.  If you are not aware of it, it is probably bad.

Anyway, as with many of us, the original discs were missing or lost.  New systems today don't even have original discs.  Companies insist that you create your own set of backup discs or USB backup utilities.  I URGE YOU, right now to go create them.. even before finishing this read.  Seems the HP laptop came with Windows 8.1, and on the site have only Windows 8.1 compatible drivers available for some of the hardware components.  So Windows 8.1 it was.  At least HP offered the re-install "discs" on a USB drive for $50.  A bit steep, but in the long run worth it.

Why?  See the OS that comes from the vendors now have the activation codes set to be automatic.  No longer does one have to type in the long series of codes from a sticker plastered on the bottom of the laptop or PC.  Matter of fact, there are no stickers anymore for many modern PCs and laptops.

I re-installed the OS, after I saved the users data to a CD.  The tool clears the drive, wipes it clean, and installs the pristine OS windows 8.1.  Awesome.  Now, copy the users data to the laptop, and finished?  Well, not quite, his apps can not be re-installed, since there are no discs.  Many are a few years old, and not available.  One in particular will need to be re-purchased.  Users doesn't mind, but it is a hassle.  This way he will have the latest an greatest software, updated, and will have backup media, if ordered.

After it was loaded, files copied, time to do updates.  But no luck.  Updates would not work.  The windows 8.1 interface, in all it mono chromatic blocky self, didn't provide any errors, codes or problems pop ups.  It just keep looking, and looking, and looking for updates.  Many hours went by, several days n a row, and even one full weekend for around 12 hours.  So I am no Einstein, but I think it has a problem.  A bit of searching the net provides some ideas from various people.  One such solution, I believe based on experience, is probably the right one.  The Update engine needs to be updated to the latest version, so it talks the proper language back to the mother ship.  I turn off the auto update, something I can not do in 10, to ensure update problems don't cancel each other rout.  I apply Windows8.1-KB3138615-x64.msu, and restart.  I run Windows Update manually, check for updates, and let it run for about 15 minutes.  It finally comes back with a magic screen saying, updates need to be applied.  Woo Hoo!  I check out the list, and it is some 2 GIG of updates.  Thanks goodness for cable internet speeds.

In my next post I plan to let you know how all went to conclusion, and will provide you some tips on how to guard against root kits, viruses, trojans, and hackers.  I also plan to give you some opinions on Windows 8.1 against Windows 7, and Windows 10.

Essentially, Trump's promise to build a wall and end illegal immigration has caused a rush for the border that is crippling Mexico's resources. Mexico can either let undocumented migrants enter their country willy nilly en route to the US, or they can take strong action to stem the tide of immigration for their own benefit. Which would be best accomplished by building a wall, either literally, or through a strict enforcement policy.

All of a sudden, Trump's absurd claim that Mexico would pay for the wall doesn't sound so absurd.

George Barris, Creator Of The Batmobile, Passes Away At 89

George Barris passed away recently and was 89 years old.  Though I always knew he created the Batmobile, one of my favorite cars. I did not know that he did so many other Hollywood icon vehicles too.

Some of his most famous cars include the original Batmobile, KITT from "Knight Rider" and the Munster Koach from "The Munsters" and the General Lee from the "Dukes of Hazzard."

What a brilliant guy!  He came up with endearing one of a kind creations, many of which are still recognized today.

Carl's Jr has released their Superbowl commercial early to controversy.  The commercial has model Charlotte McKinney introduce us, in her special way, to the All Natural Carl's Jr Burger.  Some say this is sexist, and others say it is a step backwards.  But frankly how can they tell the sex of the burger? I also didn't see her walk backwards once.  I know, I watched it several times.  Seriously, why are people so hung up on a pretty lady, walking in, and getting attention.  This is exactly why this commercial is fantastic!  It does the job, and Charlotte deserves the attention.  Way to go for her, and for Carl's Jr to have the guts to keep the message simple, artistic, mysterious, sexy and still funny.  Reminds me of clips in Austin Powers movies.  I don't see anything wrong with it, and she is doing nothing crude or inappropriate. No reason to run from our natural tendencies to admire beautiful people, and eat burgers. A natural couple.

Batman Sideshow Statue Repaint - You Tube - Rafael Robledo Jr

I am always incredulous at the amount of raw talent that some individuals have.  This artist takes a Batman statue, removes the clothing, and does a full repaint.  The work is superb.  It is exactly what I aspire to do.  Always wonderful watching a master craftsman at work, and to see his techniques and methods for painting and designing various changes on statues.  This video is just one of many, and I urge you to watch when you can, just how the process takes shape.  Rafael Robledo Jr is the artist, my hats off to you sir!

Dover Downs, in Dover Delaware has a new game, Batman Classic TV Series.  This is an enjoyable game.  It has great sounds, the classic theme (redone for the game) and some nice clean animations depicting the opening series intro and the Classic Batmobile on screen doing high powered features.  For those who enjoy the classic show, this game is a must see.  This game shows that even an older show from the 60s can be new again.  The designer takes us on a modern play with what seems a new and fresh show, reborn.  Check out the website, and the You Tube Video showing the features.

Wow, Futuristic Amazon Echo

I can recall watching SciFi movies, and reading SciFi novels that would have futuristic automation, in anything from the main ship, to small devices that were carried by people.  Think Star Trek, and the ships computer.  This little device has taken Apple's Siri to a whole new level.  I do have reservations about a mic always on in my home, can this be hacked?  Probably.  But the concept is amazing and something I want to own!

Star Trek Continues = FANTASTIC, Episode 3: FAIREST OF THEM ALL.

There are a few fan sites that have been doing original work that left off after the original Trek 5 year mission.  "Star Trek Continues" has been one of those endeavors.  This is their latest release, "FAIREST OF THEM ALL", and I must say it sets the standard for well done cinema in the original template format.  Just goes to prove that Paramount and CBS could place this show back on the air, with new people in the original Kirk, Spock and McCoy roles (which I said could be done when The Next Generation came out), and create a new volume of classic trek episodes for the fans. If they wanted to...  Kudos to the "Star Trek Continues" Crowd.  This latest release is the best I have seen, I dare say it even beats some of the original Trek classics.

New 2015 Dodge Challenger and Charger

Get a look at the new 2015 models of the Dodge Challenger and the Charger.  These debuted at the New Your International Auto Show.  I am not sure if it is wise to update both of the flagship cars from Dodge.  Challenger needed a minor refresh, and it is fantastic.  Challenger is a true retro sports car, unmistakable looks and retro design. Charger was done just redone ~ 4 years ago.  I would have rather saw Charger redone next year.  I really like the Challenger and I need some more time for the Charger.  I don't think the Dart like grill is aggressive enough to qualify as a sports car anymore.  But I do still like the Charger, the rear lights and the coke bottle side.  Perhaps they should have donned a hood scoop of some kind on the Charger.

The first shift was the changing demographic landscape, with the leading edge of the baby boomers starting to reach driving age. In 1964, the 16-to-24-year-old age group was the fastest growing in America. Young people did not want to drive the kind of cars their parents drove. They wanted bucket seats, floor shifts, and the sporty feeling of being close to the road. (What a difference from young drivers today.) The second trend was the massive increase in two-car households. In 1959, only a million families had more than one car; by 1964, that number had skyrocketed to thirteen million.

Back on Sept 2013 I noted how awful IOS7 appeared, and that without Steve Jobs, Apple will start a slow decline into the abyss.  Seems that I could be correct, with the exit of key Apple User Interface Chief Greg Christie.  He was the driving force to the brilliant interfaces pre IOS7, under Jobs.

Windows XP - Say Goodbye to the Best

Windows XP support has ended.  XP is still used and running 30% or more of the back end systems and infrastructure we know today, from bank machines to cash registers.  Home users still run it.  Commercial companies and government agencies still use it.  Support ends April 15th, and that makes for a 13 year run that will be unparalleled.  No Operating System in the Microsoft fold has or probably will measure up to the intuitive, simple yet powerful interface that Windows XP sports.  It runs on old slower hardware or high end devices, uses high or low end graphics well, has a driver for almost any piece of hardware out there right now, and is robust enough to handle heavy loads, especially the lesser known 64 bit variant, which lacked the driver support XP was popularly known for.  Ok for all of the Windows XP haters, many of who will say I am crazy as a loon for my nod to Windows XP unparalleled immortality...  What is poised to take XP's place?  Not Vista, nor Windows 7, which both are resource piggies, even 7 is not as nearly stable and overall functional, nor is it easier to configure than XP, and Windows 8 saw productivity fall through the floor with its introduction of a fashionably trendy row blocks and text that resembled graphics on an old Dos shell.  If you want to get something done, XP was and is the OS of choice.  If you want pretty yet buggy, try Vista, if you want function but glacier slow shaded graphics and transitions, try Windows 7, if you want bland and easy to read but don't need multitasking (buzz word kiddies, from the 80s and 90s) go with Windows 8.  If you want to do computing, calculations, conversions, real work, or system to network transfers... XP is the winner.  To be productive, XP is still hands down the best.  If you want to slow down, to watch pretty videos or pictures, and experience gee whiz doo dads, XP is not for you.  It should have been an easy decision for Microsoft to continue support, even cheap support, such as a low cost extended warranty and continued pay as you go general support.  But no, they would rather dump millions into an effort to control the customer, instead of helping them get something done.  This is the trend today with all technology companies, to force you to do what they want you to, yet pay extra for it - Sneaky huh?  Shame is that XP is a champion OS that we may not see again in our lifetime, maybe never again if tablets do finally conquer the hearts and minds of XP lovers, since XP is no longer a contender, that can now happen.

Ultimate Warrior Passes at Age 54! WWE Hall of Fame Member 2014!

Just days after his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, the Ultimate Warrior, real name Jim Hellwig, dies at the age of 54.  Best known for his over the top cryptic interviews, and high energy matches, the Ultimate Warrior was one of the most well known and remembered.
